Settings to change

Bypass Office Backstage and get to ‘real’ Open or Save dialogs

File -> Options -> Save -> Save Documents then “ Don’t show the Backstage when opening or saving files with keyboard shortcuts “.

Force Microsoft Office to Save Files Directly to Your Computer (Instead of OneDrive)

File -> Options -> Save -> Save documents section, enable Save to Computer by default. Below that, click the Browse button next to Default save file location and pick the folder where you want to save Word files by default.

Allow editing of files on your NAS

File -> Options -> Trust Center -> Trust Center Settings -> Trusted locations -> Add new location -> type in \\netbiosname\ and check subfolders.

IF you get the "remote or network path is not allowed by your current security settings" warning you didn't click the "Allow trusted locations on my Network (not recommended)" checkbox
