Because MediaWiki fucks around with formatting, sometimes you want to turn this off.

The <nowiki> tag removes formatting but also removes line breaks. There is a trick for paragraphs to remove formatting by having a leading space. The one I like is prefixing text with <pre>tekst with # or whatever and linebreaks</pre> tags. This stops # from becoming numbered lists (very unhandy if copying linux conf files with loads of #####s in them) but keeps the line break formatting.
